Coach Stacia
Shelton found her love for swimming in the
70's and 80's from the age of 6 on a competitive year round
AAU team near Morro Bay California. She traveled with her team
to San Diego in 1980 and completed her first open water mile at the
La Jolla Cove Rough water swim at the age of 12. She also swam
varsity in San Diego county for both the Helix High School team her
freshman year and the team at Point Loma High School her sophomore
year. She walked away from swimming for 23 years to raise a family.
She has two daughters ages 17 and 21.
In
2007 she sought out swimming as a low impact cardio exercise to
make lifestyle changes after ignoring doctors advice to seek weight
loss surgery. As a result of this choice she has reclaimed her love
for the sport, her health, her mobility and managed to lose 185
lbs, so far, and changed not only her life, but to affect the lives
of those around her.
Her employment history and
education background lies in early childhood education, so her
choice to transfer to a more active job as a swim instructor and
swim coach was a natural one. Her passion for the water
and fitness swimming for life, is infectious and
genuine. She has 21 years of experience working
with children and has creative approaches to working with kids of
all needs. She spent a summer as
aquatics director at Camp Shane, the longest running weight loss
camp in the US for kids. There she interacted with over 500
children and young adults. She has coached with Cascadia Swimming
and Tornadoes Swim teams. She is a ASCA Level 2
coach
