This page is designed to answer questions that you may have as a potential new member of the club.

 

General Swim Team Questions

Q: Why should my child swim?
A: There are many benefits to getting your child involved in competitive swimming, including:

  • Swimming promotes physical development.
  • Swimming develops aerobic endurance and is one of the most beneficial forms of cardiovascular exercise.
  • Swimming enhances a child’s natural flexibility and promotes muscle development.
  • Swimming develops superior coordination.
  • Swimming is the most injury-free of all children’s sports.
  • Swimming is a sport that will bring children fitness and enjoyment for life.
  • Swimming promotes time management and is one of the top academically achieving sports.
  • Swimming is an important safety skill for young children.

Q: What is the swim team and why would I want my child to participate?
A: It’s fun. It’s great exercise. It builds confidence. It’s a great way for your child to meet other kids in the neighborhood. It’s a great way for you to meet other parents.

Q: Who can answer my questions about the swim team?

Q: What strokes do the swimmers use in competition?
A: Freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.

Q: What swimming strokes does my child need to know to join the team?
A: If you child is 5 to 18 and can swim a length of the pool of both front crawl and back stroke and has a little knowledge of the breaststroke or elementary backstroke kick then they should come to swim team tryouts.

Q: What is a tryout and what should I expect?
A: Tryouts are done several times through the year. It is an evaluation done by our coaching staff to place each swimmer in the best possible group level. We start accepting swimmers out of lesson programs around the ARC 3 level. Each swimmer is different and may or may not be ready. The tryout will last about 30 minutes. Swimmers should be ready to swim with swimsuit, goggles, and a towel. If you have had previous swim team experience, please send us an email at Contact tab before coming to a tryout.

Q: What to wear?
A: Swimmers must come to the evaluation session ready to swim. This includes:

  • Proper swim training attire.
  • Goggles and a swim cap if the child needs one.

Q: How do I schedule a tryout?
A: We offer several tryouts throughout the year, usually they are done at the Tualatin Swim Center. 

Q: I just want my child to learn how to swim better. Do they have to swim in competition?
A: You should discuss this with the coach. Our program is a competitive program and the focus of the training is on competition. There are competitions for all levels in our program.    .

Q: What entities regulate the sport of competitive swimming for the team?
A: Oregon Swimming (OSI) and USA Swimming (USAS) are the governing bodies of competitive swimming in our area and the U.S.A. respectively.


Specific TTSC Swim Team Questions


How is the club structured? 

There are currently six squads within the club that cover different levels of ages and abilities.   Most new swimmers will begin in either the Snapper or Terrapin squads.  Details can be found on the Swim Group Tab.


How much will it cost?

There is an annual registration fee: $107

This fee consists of annual USA Swimming fee ($57) and TTSC administration fees($50).

Monthly Dues are based on the squad:

Snapper and Terrapins- $55

White Group-               $74

High School Rec-          $80

Blue Group-                 $95

Green Group-               $107

Elite-                           $120

 

Family Monthly Dues Discount: There is a $15 discount for the 2nd swimmer in a family, $20 discount for the third swimmer, 4th swimmer and more are free.

Where are practices?

Practices are held at either the Tualatin Swim Center (located at the Tualatin High School ) or the Tigard Swim Center (located at the Tigard High School ).   Snapper and Terrapin Practices are available at either pool.

When and where are the competitions?

Swimming competition is split into a “short course” and a “long course” season.   Short course Season runs from September to March, generally using 25-yard pools.   Long course Season runs from April to August, generally using 50-meter pools.   There are a number of meets during the season that your swimmer is expected to attend.   Group Meet schedules for the current season are posted on the Home page of the website.   Snapper and Terrapins should follow the Novice Meet Schedules.   These meets usually take place on a Friday night in lieu of practice or on weekend mornings.   The meets are generally scheduled about 3- 4 weeks apart.   Most meets are home meets or with in a 45-minute drive.

 

How long are practices?

Generally as the swimmer progresses there is more practice time…

Snapper & Terrapins-        3 X 45 minutes

White-                             5 X 60 minutes

HS Rec-                           5 X 75 minutes

Blue -                              5- 6 X 90 minutes

Green-                             5- 6 X 90-120 minutes

Elite-                               Same as Green plus 2 to 4 morning weekday

                                       75 minute sessions

 

When are practices?

Practice times vary depending on the High School pool usage during any given season.   Our club makes every effort to maximize utilization of the available time we are able to purchase from the School District.

How do I join? 

There are usually four Try-Outs per year. 

These take place in Mid-September, Early November, Early January, and Mid-April.   A swimmer can join the club by either attending a New Swimmer Try-out session (see website for exact date and time) or contact one of the Head Coaches: Jeanine Serrano  Or  Eric Smith
